Default [Grand Discussion]Would Guild Wars go open source when Guild Wars 2 come out?

As we know many innovating games have gone open source. Some examples would be quake 3, freespace 2, warzone 2100, bzflag etc.

I wonder when would Guild Wars be open source so that the community could enjoy it more freely and even participate in game development to make this a culture phenomenon like starcraft.

Let's discuss the possibility, I know it is endless.

There's a very simple reason for why it won't be opened: HoM

Only when the servers die.
Then they'll make a fortune selling server kits.

No, they wont, because part of the source code will be used in GW2 and in no way are they opening up their networking code.

If the servers die its because no one is playing anymore..so why would they Open Source it if no one is interested in playing anymore?

It would be kinda funny to kill Shiro by throwing toilets at him.

Well they will never give their source ^^

Because what if Blizzard get it in hands? Then they can use it to back fire it at Anet ^^

Its not that "MMORPG" should give their source open to public for some reasons, if you do it and you use the same basic source to guildwars 2 you can hack the client...

Thats one very big problem...

So lets see what would happend when guildwars 2 comes out

It'll never happen. Very few games ever get released into the public domain let alone getting released with the inclusion of their source code under an open source license (e.g. GPL).

It'll never happen, for the reason quoted above. GW servers are open as long as GW2 is around, since that is the concept behind HoM, ie the ability to go back at any time and finish a title for a GW2 unlock.

Christ people the game is only 2 and some years old! All this conjecture about the game ending is idiotic. Not everyone is going to rush off and get GW2 and forget about this one...not everyone is going to go into GW2 first and not try guild wars...

I'm getting tired of reading how Guild Wars is dead and they're not going to support it anymore and blah blah blah. just because they cancelled the 4th campaign doesn't mean they won't have anything new for us, especially in the 2 years or so we have to wait for GW2.

Grand Discussion? hmmm, I don't think it will be really big, a few people know about open source and understand what that means.

Anyway, you can already forget forever about GW as open source; Making that will potentially convert GW in the best game of history, even better than GW2, so, do you think ArenaNet wanna that?

I highly say no.

NCSoft soft own's GuildWars, even if Anet wanted to it's NCSoft's ownership.

From an interview about licensing the GW engine and the answer was that it would only be licensed to other NCSoft' dev teams / games. Aka nothing outside of NCSoft.

Since it looks like GW2 is going to be an MMO, and thus of no interest to a portion of the current GW community, it would certainly be nice if something like this were done. At a minimum, I hope they'll keep the GW1 servers up for a good, long time.

They can open source GW1 when GW2 has reached its end of life. Before then is too early.

Shouldn't Duke Nukem 3D be on that list as well? Original Doom as well, if I remember correctly.

I don't think so, an open source Guild Wars may give a lot of competition for a commercial Guild Wars 2. But it would be nice. I've seen m,any nice projects to games that turned to open source.

You can't expect ArenaNet to give up confidential information to general public. Open Sourcing GW would cause major security issue as people who have accounts could be stolen at any given time because there are plenty of hackers out there who would love to get into your account and steal & sell your identity.
